Eyeliner Tips That’ll Take You From Beginner to Pro

Eyeliner is the perfect way to enhance, shape, and draw attention to your eyes. You can get as creative, dramatic, or subtle as you want to. If you love the look of the liner, but struggle to apply it, we’ve put together some easy eyeliner hacks to help you go from “oh no” to pro.

Use the Right Type of Eyeliner

First things first, product. There are a whole bunch of different types of eyeliner out there. Here’s what’s best for your look:

♡ Pencil

Easy to use and gives a great, smokey, and smudged eye effect. It’s also multipurpose. One downside is that it doesn’t have the same staying power as some of the other types.

♡ Liquid

Perfect for fine lines, dramatic sweeps, and precise applications. It can take a little practice to get the hang of it, but you’ll be ready in no time.

♡ Gel

Amazing for all-day wear due to the serious staying power and works well for bold looks. You need a steady hand but practice makes perfect!

♡ Budget-Friendly: L.A. Girl Gel Eyeliner

♡ Pen

Perfect for beginners and is super easy to use. Some even have a slanted tip so that you can wing your liner like a pro.

♡ Budget-Friendly: Almay Pen Eyeliner Pen

Magnetic (our favorite)

Ideal for applying your lashes and liner all in one go.

Application Tips & Tricks

♡ Do Your Prep

If you have oily lids, take a little time to prep and prime properly. This makes sure that your liner applies evenly and doesn’t miss any spots. If there’s oil on the skin, your liner won’t sit – however many times you go over the same spot!

♡ Get Up Close and Ready For Action

A handheld or magnifying mirror is a must for applying your liner perfectly. Position yourself slightly looking down. If you need help with steadying your hand, place your liner-applying arm on a table or surface at the elbow. Weird tip: tensing your toes will help with shaky hands.

♡ Start at the Wing

It might sound the wrong way around but by doing your wing first, and then moving on to your lash line you’ll find it way easier to get the angle right and make both sides match. Plus if you do decide you’re not happy with it, it’s way easier to start over.

♡ Join The Dots

Struggling with shaky hands? Join the dots! By creating dots along the lash line and your wing then joining them together you can stay on track with your liner.

♡ Use A Stencil or Stamp

Whether you want to get creative or just do a simple wing, there is a huge range of stencils and stamps out there to help keep your liner crisp and on-point. If you want to wing but don’t have a stencil (and can’t get it right) a post-it note angled at the side of your eye will work in a pinch.

♡ Wait to Fix Mistakes

You might be tempted to try and clean up as you go, but that’s the quickest route to panda eyes! If you make a mistake with your liner, be patient and wait till it dries before you clean it up. This way you won’t wreck the rest of your makeup either.
